Christian responce to militant Atheism |

Gareth Sherwood
Atheists say this world is all there is and science will eventually find all the answers without God. Science is the word of their god. Christians believe God created the universe, he is the artist and has chosen to reveal himself to us. The Bible is the Word of God and tells us some of the history of him revealing himself to humankind. God saw the suffering of our situation and came to suffer alongside us in the form of Jesus, the effects of this is transforming people even today. Through Jesus all things will eventually be made perfect, new. |

Mal 3v1-6-12 Tithing 22.5% |
| 03/01/10 |
Maldwyn Jones
Tithing in the old testament wasn't just 10% of income but counting all the laws adds up to 22.5% (including sacrifices) of income. Giving out of the blessings God has given. The New testament carries the idea of giving of more, but without the law of tithing. Tithing of 10% should therefore be seen as a grateful minimum! Any less is robbing God. We are stewards of God's property. Giving of your substance. Giving back to God, where God protects your property against satan's attack. |

Col 1v13-23 Depending on an awesome God |
| 03/01/10 |
Simon Martin
Jesus shows us what the invisible God is like(v15). And through him we are reconciled to an awesome God(v23). Awe isn't just an emotion. Obedience should then follow. The ideal man may be independent but it is Jesus that holds it all together! We are dependent on God, we should be more so, as he enables us to do more than we could physically. We may panic when we loose control, but we should rest as he has control and knows best. Endurance is needed because of suffering we will endure, patience required because we will wait and joy is also given. |

Sin - What is it? What can we do about it? |
| 06/12/09 |
Kristi Mair
What is sin/being totally depraved?
- it is lawlessness, that is doing what we know we shouldn't, going against God and his nature.
Why should we be reminded about our sinfulness?
We need to know we are sinful in order to be sorry for our state and call out for God's help.
What does this tell us about God?
God wants the best for us and He is holy, pure, right but also merciful. It was for us, showing the extent of his love, that he sent Jesus, whom we crucified, taking punishment we deserved, to allow us to be healed, changed, forgiven, and our relationships restored. |

Less money can make us more happy than more money. Three good things that have become destroyers since sin entered the world are money, sex & power. Giving of time & talent as well as money. Different types of giving: guilt giving, we give what we ought to, what we want to, a thanksgiving gift, or it is our nature to give. Cheerful giving. How to be rich not to get rich. Corinthians were not giving as much as the other gentile believers in the area in collections taken for the poorer of the jews.
Giving is service, grace & fruit.
Afliction & hardship + grace = joyful giving(v2-3). If we analyse things ourselves we cannot find a reason to give. How we give is more important than what to give. Promise giving must equal performance giving. Giving by faith v13-16, money should be set aside beforehand. |

Money & Prosperity MK 10:17-31 |
| 22/11/09 |
Maldwyn Jones
In 'the Lord's prayer' that Jesus teaches his disciples, the only asking for ourselves is for our daily bread. The Lord will provide. God maintains all creation with the properties which he gave it according to his will; He has an interest in it all. The manna & quail provided to Israel in the wilderness had to be collected individually and cooked and used imaginatively. We should be giving rather than receiving, so that we bless others, not being stingy.
1tim6v6-10 Godliness leads to financial gain.

Money Matters |
| 15/11/09 |
Matt Churchouse
2350 verses in the Bible on the subject of money
e.g. Matt 6v19-24,Luke 12v13-21,1Tim 6v17-19
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth
Adverts are saying you need this product!
Happiness is not found in these 'treasures'
Our possession of these things is 'so that we can live in this world and look after it' not to be our security.' but to put our hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment''
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven: A 'Good eye' = being generous ='open handed' whereas a 'Bad eye' = being stingy = tight fisted
Giving money away liberates our heart's consumeristic grasp on it. |

Difficult Questions: The Resurrection |
| 15/11/09 |
Trevor Partington
The resurrection IS the Christian faith!
Jesus only appeared to his own followers, or rather those who he appeared to then did follow Jesus afterward (this would then include Paul). He appeared to 500 followers at one time.
Islamics believe the swoon theory - that Jesus didn't actually die but survived the crucifixion - a miracle in itself.
Matt 28v12-15. The disciples were so frightened that they fled Jerusalem on the night. The Jews didn't want Jesus' foretold resurrection being told if not true, so Roman soldiers sealed & guarded the tomb.
Christianity acknowledges the sinful human heart and gives us a hope that Humanism doesn't. |

The Word Of God |
| 01/11/09 |
Matt Churchouse
Jeremiah, Moses "not a good speaker?"
Haggai sent, God spoke through the prophet
"Thus says the LORD": the authority of the LORD is behind the words; Do not argue with it. Do not say so if the authority is not in the words you say.
Jesus used the authority of the existing scriptures "it stands written" to answer temptation & questions. Jesus' words are also counted equal with scripture - he IS the Word of God.
The apostles, as witnesses of the Word of God, had the authority to write scripture.
Now we know the Bible is the word of God, what difference should this make on our lives? - we should obey it, it gives us hope, security, freedom etc. There is no higher authority to say it is the word of God than God saying so. |

Isaiah 55 Be Filled with the Holy Spirit |

We need the water of life - the Holy Spirit
Being filled with the Spirit always follows conversion, never vice verca, both are the work of the Holy Spirit. Public baptism in water follows conversion as soon as practical. The Spirit speaks to the believer.
The action of the Spirit can be quite surprising at times including drunken appearance. The discernment comes from the fruit that follows. |

Why did he come?
Nicodemus was honest in his conversion - we might not know that much about him and though he came in secret at night, he does stand up for Jesus later. It is not important when he came but that he did. ('if' not 'when'). It may not be easy being a Christian. Jesus goes through some issues more difficult to understand with this religeous leader & teacher of the day - "To see the kingdom of God you must be born again!" |

Awkward Questions 3 - Miracles & The Virgin birth |
| 26/04/09 |
Trevor Partington
If God is perfect & in complete control why does he then need to interven? - Man has messed it up with his sin.
Scientists & psychologists may be able explain some miracles but not the absolute timing.
The big ones are the Virgin birth & the resurrection
Isaiah 7v14 virgin=alma= young unmarried woman (bethulah=virgin exicit but also (joel) =married woman, narrah=young woman)
Matt 1v20,luke 1v34-5 'since I am a virgin'
Epistles written with delicacy possibly due to Mary & Joseph being alive at time & possible lack of openness or information received
- Jesus needed to be sinless (fully God & fully man)
Mary needed the Holy Spirit at pentecost like any other believer because she wasn't imaculatly conceived like Jesus was.

Conflict Matt18v15-17 |
| 19/04/09 |
Maldwyn Jones
The key is to be able to manage yourself through conflict. The leadership are there to make changes.
Civil war: both parties can be equally devoted to the work of God...
Avoiding conflict:
Criticism - who made it - are they really a friend?
there is some truth in any criticism - though people will weigh it according to their relationship to you.
If there is a consistency in criticism then there is something that will dog you till you deal with it!
Rebuke: truth in love, genuine for our benefit
When rebuking be sure: Not to be misunderstood, not in anger, in person, witnessed, of the whole story, give opportunity for confession & forgiveness.
Discipline: maintenance of righteousness, restoration of the sinner.
When dealing with people with difficulties: First pray. Treat with love. Don't argue. Try to defuse emotive language. Be honest but avoid gossip. Don't carry the burden alone. |

Difficult questions part 2 |
| 05/04/09 |
Trevor Partington
Do Science & the Bible contradict one another?
Science tells us How/What. The Bible tells us Why. e.g. Creation v evolution though different christians have different views. a true scientist will analyze all the available information and make a conclusion from them. The Bible was written down by about 40 authors, but is uniformed by God who doesn't change. The bible has been noted to be remarkably accurate in facts stated (e.g. that author would not know) and propheses made. |
